over the past few weeks my appreciation for the older men in this world who have served their country in countless ways has grown exponentially. I have had the unique opportunity to spend 24 hours each week with this amazing generation. their stories, wit and willingness to let me learn from them is incredible. no matter how many times it takes me to find the vein to draw blood their patience and encouragement, i am so thankful for. i have been placed at the Veterans Affair Medical Center or VAMCSL for short this semester. i was unsure of this at first but from the moment i walked in the door the stories and laughter have made me roll on the floor.

each day, standing in the main lobby you will see a small old brittle man. he is blind and full of energy. but unlike most of the men in the building, he is not a patient (at a least not at this time). he sings and plays his guitar to entertain patients, guests and staff. what a joy, free entertainment and he is pretty good.
another fellow you might run into spends his time in the "canteen" or cafeteria. his name is michael. each day he has a new song, joke or perverted comment. he is from las vegas and according to him he was "born to sing to and serenade the ladies." you might not get it from the picture but he says his body is like steel.
